Overview

At Houston Methodist, the Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET) III position is responsible for providing technical & On-Call support on the analysis, maintenance, calibration, installation, and upgrades on all assigned medical and other electronic equipment and demonstrate technical support for all modalities of medical, surgical, and other therapeutic equipment, and conduct safety inspections for the institution and to meet regulatory guidelines. This position provides first call technical support for x-ray and imaging systems and first call and scheduled maintenance for ultrasound systems. The BMET III position works under minimal supervision and conducts work, provides records, and maintains a database of scheduled maintenance, corrective maintenance, and safety testing in accordance with manufacturer, regulatory, and department guidelines. This position provides on-call support after normal working hours on a rotational basis and supports special projects and installations under the guidance of the Clinical Engineer or management.

Responsibilities

PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Facilitates open, professional (verbal, nonverbal, written) communication to obtain access to equipment, resolve equipment issues and achieve mutual understanding, role modeling by example. Communication to promote both work efforts and problem resolution is clear and professional, providing the highest quality service during every customer encounter.
  • Role models behaviors that promote a positive work environment and contributes to a team-focused work unit to achieve department goal. Provides on-the-job training for BMET trainees, BMETs, and other contract personnel to build confidence in their skills, knowledge and abilities.
  • Provides on-call support after normal working hours on a rotational basis. Initiates contributions towards improvement of department scores for employee engagement, i.e. peer-to-peer accountability.


SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Proactively works with hospital departments and communicates the status of repairs and ensures minimal equipment downtime.
  • Ensures thorough entity surveillance through rounding and issue management; identifies opportunities for patient medical equipment improvements, providing recommendations and overseeing its completion to advance the customer experience and improve service levels.
  • Monitors outside support activities with vendors and clients to obtain completion of equipment support activity and ensures all activities are documented.


QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Monitors calibration status of test equipment and takes appropriate actions to ensure compliance.
  • Represents hospital in regulatory agency inspections and may sit on hospital safety and equipment selection committee.
  • Performs analysis, troubleshooting and complex patient medical equipment repair per manufacturer established specifications. Ensures accurate installation of systems and devices, in compliance with codes, ordinances and statutes.


FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Ensures accuracy and completeness for documentation all equipment support activities performed in database on time as per established guidelines.
  • Utilizes resources and supplies with cost effectiveness and value creation in mind. Self-motivated to independently to manage time effectively, minimizing incidental overtime, to meet established department guidelines and prioritize daily tasks, assisting coworkers as needed.


GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Participates in leading special projects, department champion opportunities, mentoring other department staff. Evaluates and recommends new ideas that improve medical equipment quality, safety, and service.
  • Performs trainings as a subject matter expert (SME) for department and actively participates in department projects.
  • Provides nursing in-service on equipment operational issues to reduce Use Errors while improving patient quality of care.
  • Seeks opportunities to identify self-development needs and takes appropriate action. Ensures own career discussions occur with appropriate management. Completes and updates the My Development Plan on an on-going basis.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

  • Associate's degree in Biomedical Technology (BMET), Electronics Engineering or related field OR successful completion of Military BMET training
  • Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering or Electronics Engineering preferred


WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Five years of experience in maintaining electronics or electromechanical equipment, or four years maintaining medical equipment

License/Certification
