Overview

This role will be supporting the southern region of the Houston Methodist Physician’s Organization, primarily serving physicians and clinic employees connected to or surrounding HM Clear Lake, HM Baytown and HM Sugar Land hospitals. Travel will be expected to those locations.

 

At Houston Methodist, the Corporate Chaplain position is responsible for assisting leadership, providing resources to help meet workforce, patient, fiscal and administrative goals by strategic planning and programming. This position is responsible for providing guidance for spiritual care to meet the spiritual, religious, and emotional needs of Houston Methodist employees, proactively identifying when a change in approach or intervention is necessary, taking appropriate action and involving others as needed. As the senior level, in addition to performing the duties of Chaplain, the Corporate Chaplain position creates awareness of Spiritual Care resources for the purpose of staff support. This position conducts I CARE values integration, using specialized techniques to help staff integrate I CARE into their personal culture using coaching and modeling behaviors. The Corporate Chaplain position uses specialized support techniques to assist professionals with overcoming challenges in the workplace, facilitating long-term spiritual care support for employees, staff, and management.

Responsibilities

PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Role models a supportive and positive environment. Collaborates with Human Resources (HR) and Organizational Development (OD), by role modeling mitigation of conflict, leading problem-solving, and resolution efforts, and communication in a positive, supportive, non-judgmental manner.
  • Assists leadership, providing resources to help meet workforce, fiscal and administrative goals by strategic planning and programming.
  • Takes initiative to build constructive relationships with employees to identify and address spiritual and emotional needs, taking appropriate action and involving other departments as needed, including HR and OD.
  • Utilizes leadership skills to develop strategies for improving employee morale and promoting effective teamwork, partnering with HR and OD. Drives initiatives to improve department scores for employee engagement and values integration.


SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provides coaching to form coping techniques organic to the employee for the purpose of harmonizing work culture and maximizing productivity. Provides spiritual care to meet the spiritual, religious, and emotional needs of onsite and work-from-home employees of all faiths. Enables others to utilize their own faith as a resource for health and healing.
  • Provides on-site rounding of employee areas, equitable support for ¿working from home¿ employees, in-person, virtual, or hybrid spiritual support for individuals and groups, individual and group support and consultation, informal debriefings following crisis incidents, individual or group reflections and prayers, referrals as appropriate to HM resources, i.e. Employee Assistance Program, I CARE values integration education and support, spiritual wellness planning, grief support, team changes, administrative structural changes, home life changes, career goals, health issues, etc.
  • Conducts psycho-social and trauma-specific evaluations as needed. Serves as the initial point of contact for providing crisis assessment and intervention for employees, as needed, particularly in cases of spiritual and emotional distress as well as loss and grief, preparing Spiritual Care support for workplace teams and or individuals.
  • Serves as spiritual advisor and I CARE consultant for executive assembly, entity standing committees, department, team, system planning. Fosters a positive and constructive teaching environment by engaging co-workers in learning opportunities that are valuable and in alignment with business objectives, Houston Methodist mission, vision, and values.


QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provides consultations departments and entity leadership and staff to assess quality and safety of services provided; proactively identifies need for intervention and takes action, involving others, as necessary. Documents quality assessments/metrics/reporting, integration of I CARE values, leadership development, etc., including the planning and development of such initiative(s)
  • Designs, develops, and markets Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for equitable and measurable spiritual care response/support. Executes SOP for grief (memorial service, grief, bereavement), domestic violence, workplace violence, crisis intervention. Serves as Spiritual Care Advisor for entity Threat Assessment Team
  • Identifies initiatives/opportunities for corrective action and improvement, providing recommendations; contributes to meeting department targets for quality and safety, leads the education and implementation of quality improvement activities and department safety initiatives.


FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Utilizes resources effectively and efficiently, demonstrating responsible financial stewardship. Manages own time effectively and prioritizes work to achieve maximum results in a timely manner; assists co-workers with effective time management.


GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Organizes, develops, and monitors a comprehensive institutional multi-faith spiritual care and values integration program.
  • Provides oversight to one or more department initiatives such the annual I CARE Recharge program. Facilitates New Employee Orientation (NEO) in partnership with HR by leading the I CARE portion or other employee sessions.
  • Assists management with development, planning, activation and achievement of department vision and goals. Plans various department and or entity-wide activities such as, but not limited to worship services, I CARE values integration, accreditation readiness, bioethics, special projects, entity committees, leadership development, etc. Completes and updates the My Development Plan on an on-going basis.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

  • Master's degree in theology or related studies from an institution accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), or equivalency approved by the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), American Association of Pastoral Counselors (AAPC and only if prior to 2017), National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), Neshama: Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC), Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC), Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE), or Spiritual Care Association (SCA)
  • Four units of clinical pastoral education (CPE) from an accredited institution(s), e.g., the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE), the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC)


WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Three years' experience as a professional chaplain (post clinical pastoral education) in a healthcare setting
  • Acute care hospital setting strongly preferred

License/Certification

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS - REQUIRED

  • Must have one of the following certifications:
  •    • Board Certified Chaplain (BCCI)
