At Houston Methodist, the Director Coding position is responsible for planning, monitoring and directing the activities of the System Coding Department across all Houston Methodist facilities. The Director manages personnel performing inpatient and outpatient medical record coding, DRG and APC assignment, abstracting, and data entry functions; ensures accuracy and quality of coded and abstracted medical record data. This position coordinates coding and abstracting activities; provides data support with various departments and key stakeholders. The Director designs, implements, and monitors effective processes and systems within assigned areas of responsibility to achieve maximum efficiency, enhancing productivity and customer satisfaction. This role also assists in the development and evolution of the overall strategy for system-wide coding operations consistent with Houston Methodist strategic plans.
The Director position responsibilities include overseeing the activities of the department staff, ensuring quality, productivity, functional excellence and efficiency to accomplish strategic and operational objectives. In addition, this position is accountable for employee engagement, adequate staffing levels, budget development and compliance, staffing decisions such as hiring and terminating employment, coaching and counseling employees on work related performance, and developing and implementing policies and procedures to ensure a safe and effective work environment. This position also ensures training, monitoring and operations initiatives are implemented which secure compliance with ethical and legal business practices and accreditation/regulatory/government regulations.
The Coding Director will serve as the strategic and operational leader for professional coding services across a multi-specialty physician group within an academic medical center. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate, compliant, and timely coding of professional services to support appropriate reimbursement, minimize risk, and uphold documentation integrity. The Director oversees a team of professional coders and coding managers, develops and implements coding policies and procedures, and ensures alignment with evolving regulatory and payer requirements.
In close collaboration with clinical department leadership and faculty physicians, the Director provides targeted feedback, education, and training on documentation and coding requirements to promote accurate representation of clinical services and enhance provider engagement. The role also supports audit readiness, drives performance improvement initiatives, and leverages data analytics to monitor coding quality, productivity, and denial trends across the enterprise. This position plays a vital role in bridging clinical operations, revenue cycle management, and compliance in a highly complex academic healthcare environment.
