Overview

At Houston Methodist, the Cash Handler position is responsible for maintaining financial controls for retail food operational area revenue. This position gathers, coordinates, prepares and maintains weekly cost analyses for retail and corporate-related food services in accordance with procedures defined by management. The Cash Handler position manages cash and other forms of payment transactions and receipts in high volume. This position ensures cash handling procedures are followed and conducts audits, in conjunction with management. The Cash Handler position works closely with the Cashiers conducting training, assists management with schedules and facilitates daily breaks for the employees. This position operates the Point of Sale (POS) system and works as a Cashier during busy periods, covering as needed. The position also helps monitor basic food handling duties such as recording refrigeration temperatures, monitors pricing, makes signage and assists by checking front of house colleagues out from their shifts.

Responsibilities

PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Promotes a positive work environment and contributes to a dynamic, team-focused work unit that actively helps one another to achieve optimal department results. Works well with others to make contributions to the work effort as a whole and facilitates problem resolution.
  • Gives input on cleaning schedule assignments, as needed. Assists management with menu, signage, flyers and cafeteria communication, etc.
  • Initiates improvement for department scores on employee engagement, i.e. peer-to-peer accountability.

SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Combines multiple drops into one deposit for transfer to the bank. Follows up on inconsistencies and reconciles deposit to actual activity. Places and accepts change orders and deposits.
  • Monitors cash register stations to ensure proper customer flow and makes adjustments as needed. Ensures beverage and snack products are properly stocked and those areas are tidy.
  • Assists with schedules, checking front of house colleagues out of shift, audits and ensuring that policies and procedures are followed. Provides timely input to Cashier position evaluations as appropriate.

QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Monitors pricing for accuracy and checks for correct spelling of products. Maintains programming of the cash register system.
  • Assists with monitoring basic food handling duties such as recording refrigeration temperatures. Places work orders and maintains food service equipment, as appropriate.
  • Conducts daily safe counts, daily cashier over and shortage tracking spreadsheets for all cashiers. Collects and counts weekly vending inventory and makes bank deposit, as appropriate.

FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Conducts weekly and monthly audit for department revenue.
  • Maintains cash register banks, change banks, assuming responsibility for maintaining financial controls for all retail outlet revenue and storing and maintaining financial records.
  • Reviews all charge tickets. Handles returns and refunds on employee payroll deductions

GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Assists with special projects as required by management.
  • Seeks opportunities to identify self-development needs and takes appropriate action by participating in in-services programs and continuing education. Ensures own career discussions occur with appropriate management. Completes and updates the My Development Plan on an on-going basis.

Qualifications

EDUCATION
  • High School diploma or equivalent education (examples include: GED, verification of homeschool equivalency, partial or full completion of post-secondary education, etc.)
  • College education preferred

WORK EXPERIENCE
  • Three years' experience operating an electronic cash register and changer in a high-volume food service establishment, or other equivalent situation. For HM internal employee, two years of experience at Houston Methodist
  • Supervisory/Lead experience in healthcare food service

License/Certification

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS - REQUIRED
  • Certified Food Manager
