Overview

At Houston Methodist, the Senior Health Fitness Coordinator position is responsible for developing and supporting health promotion programming for Houston Methodist Wellness. The position effectively assesses physical fitness levels to design and implement effective exercise programs to produce positive outcomes. The Senior Health Fitness Coordinator position is responsible for the oversight and development of the staff Health Fitness Coordinators, instructing group exercise classes, coordinating recreational sport activities and operations of the Fitness Centers.

Responsibilities

PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Performs initial assessments on employees and patients referred by Wellness Coordinators and Registered Dietitians. Utilizes assessment information to clearly define client problems/needs and pursues the development of a personal fitness regimen.
  • Performs targeted interventions to engage clients in order to improve physical health on an individual and group basis.
  • Acts as a dedicated and respected resource for all wellness/related inquiries to foster a positive culture of health.
  • Designs and implements fitness programs that help client improve core function, cardiorespiratory fitness, strength, and muscular endurance, etc. and educates and promotes regimen with staff Health Fitness coordinators. All while ensuring proper scheduling of patients to maximize utilization of time and equipment.
  • Conducts self in a manner that is congruent with cultural diversity, equity, and inclusion principles. Contributes towards improvement of department scores for employee engagement, i.e. peer-to-peer accountability

SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Responsible for coordinating the day to day operations of Fitness Centers, providing onsite fitness classes and seminars at corporations as well as health fairs.
  • Performs a variety of health assessments, including metabolic, flexibility, body composition, bone density, fitness testing; health screenings including height, weight, waist girth, hip girth, blood pressure and cholesterol or HbA1c via finger sticks.
  • Performs targeted interventions to engage employees to improve physical health and fitness and collaborates with clients to create and implement appropriate individual goals, develop effective training plans, and adhere to client care.

QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Maintains and ensures proper documentation has been entered into database by all staff Health Fitness Coordinators and that the respective timelines and guidelines are met, per Departmental Policies and Procedures
  • Responsible for notifying and scheduling vendor for maintenance and any repairs to equipment within Fitness Centers.
  • Develops and distributes fitness related communications and marketing materials designed to maximize program engagement and promote health lifestyles.

FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Evaluate fitness programs and services based on participation, engagement, outcomes, cost/benefit, return on investment, efficiency, and utilization.

GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Responsible for developing and implementing new and innovative fitness exercise demonstrations, seminars, and presentations for both internal and external education.
  • Maintains professional expertise staying current with emerging physical health and fitness trends. Completes and updates My Development plan on an on-going basis, including the development of advanced skills. Ensures own career discussions occur with appropriate management.
  • Continuously improves the growth and development of wellness programs by establishing standard practices and protocols, staff development and opportunities for adding new services. Assists staff Health Fitness Coordinators with skills and knowledge development through continuous updates and optimal patient/client outcomes.

Qualifications

EDUCATION
  • Bachelor's degree in kinesiology, human performance, exercise science, physical therapy, or related field
  • Master's degree preferred

WORK EXPERIENCE
  • Five years of employee wellness, health promotion, exercise physiology, physical therapy, or related experience

License/Certification

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS - REQUIRED
  • CPTR - Certified Personal Trainer AND
  • GEI - Certified Group Exercise Instructor (ACSM) OR
  • CGFI - Certified Group Fitness Instructor (ACE) OR
  • CGFI - Certified Group Fitness Instructor (AFAA) OR
  • GPTS - Group Personal Training Specialization (NASM) AND
  • A minimum of two specialty fitness certifications from an accredited body AND
  • BLS - Basic Life Support (AHA)
